BigTown Gallery is pleased to announce its 2026 season
BigTown Gallery is pleased to announce its 2026 season, opening with Grand Finale, an exhibition dedicated to the work of Hugh Townley (1923–2008), the acclaimed sculptor and printmaker whose more than five-decade career combined material rigor with inventive, deeply personal form. A frequent early presence at the gallery, Townley played a formative role in shaping its vision and community, bringing both his extensive experience—as a longtime educator at Brown University and an artist exhibited at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art—and his generous spirit of collaboration to its development. Known for his intricate wood constructions, dynamic reliefs, and later explorations in plywood and color, his work reflects a singular visual language informed by nature, Indigenous traditions, and global spiritual inquiry. The 2026 season will also feature the return of our FILM/TALK/FOOD series with the Wild and Scenic Film Festival’s Best of the Fest selection, as well as the third year of My Place Photography Workshop 3.0, a professional development photography workshop led by Jim Dow and Cassandra Klos.

For more than two decades, BigTown Gallery has been rooted in a region shaped by independent artists working within a vital, alternative creative culture. Early on, we were drawn to a generation educated in the years following World War II—many supported by the GI Bill—whose influence helped establish the region’s respected MFA programs. Since then, the gallery has remained committed to presenting the depth and significance of their work, often through exhibitions that trace the arc of an artist’s career for a regional audience.
Now in its third decade, and in partnership with the nonprofit BigTown Projects, the gallery continues to expand its program with exhibitions by contemporary artists addressing the complexities of a changing world. At the same time, a core group of artists remains central to the gallery’s program and ongoing support.
Work is available through the BT—VT website, at exhibitions held in the gallery and at the Stable, and through select art fairs.
