What to Expect at The Stable Inn

Like-minded adventurers — first-timers, regulars, and the occasional dog (they’re welcome on the 1st floor). We've got the bed, but you're in charge of breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

You’ll always find the makings for a good cup of tea or coffee, anytime of day. Whip up a simple breakfast on the 2nd floor, or channel your inner chef and cook a full-on gourmet meal in the 1st-floor kitchen. Both kitchens, like all the common areas, are shared — in the best, most communal way. It’s a great setup for meeting new people, if that’s your thing.

Show off your latest GoPro footage or settle in for a movie night in our cozy downstairs screening room. Spin some old-school vinyl while you cook, and when you're in the mood for a quieter moment, explore our mini-libraries stocked with poetry, art history, and adventure reads — or just daydream from our sunny perch as you watch small-town life go by.

Grill in the garden, enjoy a picnic, or join us for one of our wood-fired pizza nights under the backyard pavilion (check the calendar for upcoming dates). You’re right in the heart of downtown Rochester, within walking distance of everything — including trailheads.

The inn was lovingly renovated from an 1840s structure, and you’ll still find original quirks like low ceilings and gently sloping floors — cozy reminders of the building’s past that we think add to its charm.

When you stay at the Stable, your heat and hot water come from our micro-district pellet heating system, installed by the very capable team at Lyme Green Heat. It runs on wood by-products harvested within 100 miles.

Our electricity is powered by rooftop solar panels, thanks to the great work of Same Sun of Vermont.

We also use high-efficiency heat pumps for cooling in the summer and supplemental heat during the shoulder seasons.

Fair warning: we love to nerd out about this stuff — so if you ask, be ready for a long (and enthusiastic) conversation!

  • Oh yes — it’s currently under redevelopment and getting ready to blossom with new amenities for your next visit…

The small building closest to the inn, which now houses the micro-district pellet heating system that warms the inn’s radiators and hot water, will soon become home to a petite trattoria — inspired by one fondly remembered in the mountains of Sardinia in the mid-1980s. There, you’d slide onto a bench right from the front door, immediately seated at a long farm table. You’d be offered something to drink and whatever was being served that day — always something seasonal, simple, affordable, and local. That afternoon, it was the cook’s own bread, cheese, pasta, and wine — the kind of meal you only get from hands seasoned by a lifetime of growing, preserving, and cooking food.

The garage building will help expand the bike shop’s rental offerings, allowing us to house more bikes and outfit more adventurers — whether for tackling the gaps or exploring our rugged backcountry trails, e-assisted or not.
